Joe Farmer Recreation Center’s amenities include a fitness room, full-size gym, two racquetball courts, walking and  jogging track, game room, locker rooms, meeting rooms and a hillside amphitheater.   In addition, the recreation center also offers a variety of youth and adult classes and activities.

Membership Information

Annual membership for the Joe Farmer Recreation Center is  open to both residents and non-residents. Adult membership includes full use of the facility including the fitness room. All memberships include free use of Ford Pool during the summer season.

Saturday Night Rec N Roll

Saturday Night Rec N Roll is a fun, safe, social and supervised program for kids in grades 3-6 .  The hours are from 7 pm to 11pm.   Activities  include gym games, bounce houses, supervised dancing with a  DJ, dodge ball, pool tables, foosball, table tennis, and air hockey.   Each week has a different theme and contests with prizes. 

Outdoor Adventure Fest

Novice or seasoned outdoor ethusiasts look forward to this yearly event held at Bethany Lakes Park next door to the Joe Farmer Recreation Center.     Workshops include fishing and camping 101,  archery and rock climbing.  Lear how to start a fire and how to purify water.    Additional crafts and games are held through out the event.

Lunch with the Easter Bunny

Children can join a life-sized Easter  Bunny for lunch and pictures .  He will likely nible on carrots, grass and seeds.   However the children will dine on a lunch provided by a local restaurant.

 

Joe Farmer Recreation Center Classes and Activities

 

Joe Farmer offers a variety of group exercise classes.   These include yoga, Tai-chi, Zumba, Pilates, and walking.    Individual personal training is also available.   Fitness rooms are equipped with free weights, cardio machines and weight machines.

In addition, the center offers classes on archery, fencing, disc golf, martial arts, volleyball, mult-use courts,  basketball, soccer, baseball and softball.

Lifestyle Classes

 

Other classes offered are classes on dog obedience, computers and fishing.    In addition, music and dance lessons are available students and adults at all levels.  Summer, winter and spring break camps are also held every year.   Moreover, there are also chess academies, writing classes and robotics.   Teens are invited to alcohol eduction and DWI prevention classes.   Night hikes and babysitting classes are also available throughout the year.

The city has over 21 neighborhood parks, 6 city parks, 7 special use facilities, 3 community parks, and 4 pocket parks.

The Allen Event Center  venue is 188,000 square feet.  The center has a capacity for 8,100 seats, 26 suites and two full-size ice rinks. Because  of its size, the venue hosts concerts, trade shows, sporting events, festivals, and community ceremonies. It is home to the Allen Americans, Dallas Sidekicks, Texas Revolution, and the Lone Star Conference Basketball Championship.

Senior Recreation Center  features a fitness room, a craft room, and a game room.   In addition, the center offers a variety of programs, trips and special events, activities and classes.

The Don Rodenbaugh Natatorium is a year-round facility that includes a leisure and a competition pool, a fitness center, a rock climbing wall, an aerobics room.

The edge  is an outdoor extreme outdoor sports park.   The facility features a skate park, a BMX course and two in-line hockey rinks. Outdoor facilities are free and open to the public.

Ford Pool is a summer-use facility which offers swim lessons, open swim, family swim nights and rental use.

The Courses at Watters Creek is a municipal golf complex that features The Traditions 18-Hole Championship Course, The Players 9-Hole Course and The Futures 6-Hole Short Course. The Courses at Watters Creek offers 33 unique holes of golf for every level player.

The Community Ice Rink has 300 seats, locker rooms, an equipment shop, meeting rooms, off-ice training areas and a skate rental. In addition, the ice rink offers a variety of programs and is available for private ice rental.

The Allen Public Library and Civic Auditorium offers a variety of programs for all ages.

 

Allen Independent School System

 

The city is served mostly by the Allen Independent School System.   There are 20 elementary schools for students kindergarten through 6th grade and three middles schools for students in 7th and 8th grade.  All  freshman attend the Lowry Freshman Center  and  10th, 11th and 12th grade student attend the same high school.

Allen Parks and Trails

 

The Allen Parks and Trails maps shows over 700 acres of city parks and recreational facilities.

The City of Allen classifies parks into four categories:  neighborhood parks, community park, greenbelts and special usage parks.

 

 

Allen Parks and Trails Classification

 

Neighborhood parks are generally under 10 acres and serve people within a 1/2 mile to 1 mile radius of the park. Community parks can be up to 150 acres and offer more passive and active activities.  Celebration Park is classified as a Community park.  Specific activities such as swimming, golf, or sports are deemed special use parks.  Greenbelt are 100 foot walking trails designed around a natural habit such as a creek or wooded area.

Spirit Park

Design of Phase I of the community park is complete and includes a lighted adult softball complex with parking, restroom facilities, multi-use fields, looped pedestrian trail, nature trails and playground

Moslen Farm

Moslen Farm is a 14-16 acre tract located west of Greenville Avenue and south of Ridgemont Drive. Plans   include a permanent tree farm, community gardens, prairie habitat restoration areas, pond enhancements, soft surface trails, day camping and a potential site for an environmental education center. Molsen Farm also has a trail connection between Plano to the east and the west side of U.S. Highway 75.

Historic Water Station

Allen’s Historic Water Station features an interpretive trail through Allen’s historic Houston and Texas Central Railway Water Station within Allen Station Park.  The project includes preservation of the existing historic features, including Allen’s 1873 Old Stone Dam and water tower foundations, interpretative trails and signage, overlooks, enhanced trail access, trail head improvements off of Cedar Drive and minor landscape improvements.

Green Park

Green Park, located at Alma and Comanche drive, will soon be updated with a themed playground. The design includes a fire fighter themed play structure for older children, a police officer themed structure for younger children, a play ambulance, and swings.

Allen Heritage Village

Allen Heritage Village is a re-creation of the Allen of the 1920s and 1930s. This collection of structures includes the original St. Mary Church ,  Allen Christian Church  and The Bolin House.  All are beautifully renovated and available to rent for weddings and special events.   Recent updates include additional parking, lighting and  restrooms.

 

Allen Parks and Trails Public Art

In addition to the 700 acres of parks and recreational facilities, the City of Allen also has a Public Art Program . Throughout the city there are on site-specific artwork with opportunities for hands-on encounters with art.   The Public Art Program began in 2005 with the cities first Public Art Plan.  It was later approved by the citizens of Allen in 2007.

As the city of Allen grows,  the Public Art Committee is tasked with identifying future art projects that align with the Public Art Master Plan.   For each project identified by the Public Art Committee, a subcommittee is formed to recommend the selection of an artist or artwork.   The subcommittee if formed from a pool of citizen volunteers.  Find out more about the application and selection process here.

The American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration (AAPRA), in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), announced Allen Parks & Recreation as the winner for the 2016 National Gold Medal Awards for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management.

The Villages at Allen

The Villages at Allen provides something fun for every member of the family.

The Villages at Allen is a 181-acre mixed-use retail development that includes the Allen Event Center, The Grove, Canine Commons Dog Park, the Allen Ice Rink and over 100 stores and restaurants.

The Villages at Allen and its sister shopping center, The Villages at Fairview, are together one of the newest and biggest shopping, dining and entertainment destination in the North Texas area.    A four mile hike and bikes winds around both shopping Villages.

The Villages at Allen-The Grove

 

The Grove, at the center of The Villages at Allen, features a park with plenty of seating and public restrooms.  There is also an outdoor fireplace with a pavilion of comfy chairs. Children are welcome to play in the Texas-shaped hedge maze.  In addition, there are children’s playhouses and a real red train caboose with toys inside.   For game loving adults, there are also 4 tables with built in chess boards.

 

The Villages at Allen-Canine Commons Dog Park

 

Canine Commons Dog Park is a fenced, tree-shaded haven for dogs of all shapes and sizes. The park features water fountains for dogs and their humans, benches, tables, and doggy bag stations with complimentary hand sanitizer.

Canine Kids at Canine Commons is separate area for dogs that weigh under 20 pounds. Smaller dogs can socialize without feeling overwhelmed and crowded by the larger dogs.   Of course, smaller dogs are welcome in the large dog park, but they do so at their own risk.

Canine Commons Dog Park is Tuesday through Sunday from 7 am to 10 pm.    Mondays the park opens at 10 am.

The Villages at Allen-Allen Even Center

 

The Allen Event Center is a 7000+ seat state-of-the-art facility for concerts, trade shows, professional sporting events, festivals and community ceremonies.  The center is the home ice to ECHL professional hockey team, the Allen AmericansDallas Sidekicks MASL soccer, Texas Revolution IFL professional football team, and Lone Star Conference Basketball Championship.

Premium seating is available including VIP suites, lounge and club seats. Suites are furnished with a granite wet bar and refrigerator and an in-suite catering service.  In addition, corporate logo suite identification is available.  Packages include tickets to an Allen American regular season home game.

The center opened in 2009 .  The Centers first performer was Reba McEntire.   Other headliners include the Goo Goo Dolls, The Counting Crows, REO Speedwagon, and Boston to name a few.

In addition, the Allen Event Center features a second,full- size 80 foot x 200 foot  ice surface with 300 spectator seats.  In addition,  Learn to Skate programs are available for all levels of figure skating and hockey skating. Recreational or competitive hockey league classes are also available.   The rink is also open for public skating.

Allen Community Ice Rink is designed to meet the needs of aspiring Olympians or to those just learning to skate.   A beginners through advanced competitive level skating programs is available.  Furthermore, the rink provides an elite coaching staff to take competitive skaters to the highest level that the sport has to offer.

Other amenities include locker rooms, an equipment shop, meeting rooms and an off-ice training area. Skate rentasl and on-ice harnesses are available as well.

The Allen Community Ice Rink is available for private ice rental, field trips, fund raisers, corporate team building and church functions.  Reserve up to 60 days in advance.
